BLOOR STREET Construction Update
August 13, 2008
With the Bloor Street Transformation Project (BSTP) well under way at Church St., construction is moving quickly. Phase 1 of the project includes Bloor St. East from Yonge St. to St. Paul’s Square, and is scheduled for completion in 2008. While Phase 2, begins west of Yonge St. to Avenue Rd., and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2009.
Yonge Street to Church Street:
The first phase of the BSTP has been divided into 4 Stages. Excavation of Stage 1 is now under way on the south side of Bloor St. East, between St. Paul’s Square and Park Rd. (both St. Paul’s Sq. and Park Rd., are streets on the north side, but are being used as reference points for the project.) The first of the new soil cells are being installed just west of Church St. The extensive network of cells will promote and facilitate healthy tree growth, can be seen from the pedestrian pathways.
Stage 2 will begin August 19th at Yonge St., on the north side moving toward Park Rd. Park Road to St. Paul's Square, Stage 3, is expected to begin the third week of September, 2008. Stage 4 of the work, on the south side between Yonge St. and Park Rd., will follow.
Some traffic alterations have occurred, in an effort to ease the congestion:
- The right and left turn have been prohibited onto Church St. from Bloor St.
- The restriction for prohibiting a right turn onto St. Paul’s Square, from westbound Bloor St., has been temporarily removed. This will only be in effect during Phase 1 of the BSTP.
Signage for each individual business will be installed on the blue fencing to identify the business and the point of access. Installation is expected to take place on August 19th.
Yonge Street to Avenue Road:
Toronto Hydro, and their subcontractor, ENTERA, are currently working on their services between Bay St. and Avenue Rd. However, the majority of their work remains between St. Thomas St. and Avenue Rd. Trenching and the rebuilding of their chambers will take place between now and November, 2008, on the south side of Bloor St. West.
Late night and over-night work will only occur when deemed necessary.
Consideration will be given to local residents, hotel guests and Toronto Grace Hospital patients during the construction period.
